The current state of public transportation is a joke. It is overcrowded and there it clearly needs for funding. Perhaps there should be less funding in politicians travelling abroad.
A highly functional public transportation system will reduce reliance on petroleum usage as well as reduce emissions.
Try getting around anywhere in the USA without a car, versus getting around anywhere in Western Europe without a car.

Public transportation solves the problems: climate change, traffic congestion, and freedom of movement.
@9ZW3VYM7mos7MO
Public transport is not frequent enough. Buses often drive by due to the fact there is no more room for people to get on.
@9ZVSLDZ7mos7MO
People who are unable to get where they need to get must rely on public transport, which is unreliable at the best of times. The public spenditure must be increased so that all members who rely on public transport actually get what they need.
@9ZTVMF77mos7MO
Public transport is the only feasible way of moving a mass population into a large urban centre safely, efficiently and actually positive for the environment.
@9ZMFKZC8mos8MO
Effective public transport reduces the country's carbon emissions. That is a fact and something that should be focussed on by our society. Not only does it do that though. A truly functional public transport system would reduce the need for all citizens to buy cars. It brings a more sustainable, affordable future for our country.
@9ZK4MV9Social Democrats8mos8MO
Reduced funding on public transportation is forcing people into their cars, but we have to spend the money correctly.
People in rural areas cannot access buses, where I live there is no bus stop nor train or taxi service for over a 20 minute drive, if people cannot travel from where they live they will not get jobs somewhere they cannot get to.
@9MNSBZJ1yr1Y
There needs to be a clearer vision and more accountability on timescales and budgets before we increase spending on large infrastructural projects
@9MBKCNK1yr1Y
Increased use of public transportation directly decreases the number of cars on the road, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion.
I can use my leap card on the 133 bus to Dublin from Wicklow Town, but not on the train. Kilcoole has a leap card machine at their train station.
We have a limited time to reverse the damage of climate devastation, and the major issue with ireland is its reliance on private transport. People need to start thinking of the collective good of the country rather than selfish individualism
@9LQH8651yr1Y
Because the quality is not up standard and should be invested in to raise to the level of other European countries
@9KB4GN61yr1Y
The county needs far more public transportation options such as railways in more places and a rail link from Dublin City to Dublin Airport. Ireland is plagued with cars and busses and Dublin is one of the few major cities is Europe without any rail link to the airport, and Dublin Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe.
Citizens are being forced to use their cars which increases pollution and the public transport system is already very unreliable as is
@9JVZFTB1yr1Y
Ridiculous. If it is the aspiration of the Irish government and EU to reduce our environmental impact, it is imperative that we continue and further fund public transportation. Furthermore, people from less affluent economic backgrounds should be afforded the same transportational facilities as the more affluent.
@9H9LCJJ2yrs2Y
Public transport in rural ireland is next to non existent, in Dublin it fine but i would like to see an underground system within the next 10-15 years but in rural ireland its hard to get from the countryside to the nearest town or even town to town i would increase bus services in rural areas
@9GZS2K4Independent2yrs2Y
Public transport is in a dire state right now and increasing spending in public transport infrastructure and programmes would allow for quicker trips without a car and create a more sustainable mode of travel
Public transport is vital to combatting climate emissions, as well as making a safer world for pedestrians and more accessible transport for those that cant afford a car
@9ZD66ZN8mos8MO
Cities are already at a stand still as public transport is unreliable. To reduce traffic, public transport needs to be improved so it becomes a viable solution.
@9LZ4YWMIndependent1yr1Y
Ireland can never reach its clinete goals withoht appropriate investment to public transport. Furthermore a good 21st century public transportation could help solve the oveecrowding issue in Dublin, and other major cities.
@9LVS32JIndependent1yr1Y
We should not reduce spending on public transport, our public transport system is terrible, and significant work needs to be done on this
@9Z9HGYC8mos8MO
Public transportation in Ireland - in terms of options available, quality, frequency and countrywide availability - is at far too low of a standard for a country as developed as Ireland.
@9MF5CDM 1yr1Y
The only reason cars are so appealing as an option is because public transport is terrible. Personal transport is unsustainable at scale within cities.
@9ZGLTVMSocial Democrats 8mos8MO
Public transportation benefits the low and medium class the most and is also extremely important for climate change
@9ZFRRD9 8mos8MO
There is already a lack of investment into public transport, it’s a very neglected area and hinders people who cannot/don’t drive due to long queues for the NDLS driving tests, and students who are forced to commute due to living crisis. Many people aren’t given a choice but to use public transport and it’s underfunded and poorly functioning.
@9ZF4BVK8mos8MO
It will lead to increase in cars, therefore emissions, and will increase personal costs of all car owning citizens that could go towards every day living costs
We don't live in a fantasy land, we live in the real world where we have to make pragmatic decisions-- the economic system is already screwed as it is, no kids are buying cars... If we want a stable youth workforce, maybe making sure they can actually get to their job in the first place might be a good start.
