I think family are the people you want to socialize with

Those are the people that matter, your parents may have born you, but if they don't treat you with respect, they shouldn't expect you to respect them. And as to familialism, I think that's no way to go. The government should be there for it's people. If you pay taxes for 20 years and then you loose everything, for whatever reason, you should get some help from the government back.
