I think family are the people you want to socialize with. Those are the people that matter, your parents may have born you, but if they don't treat you with respect, they shouldn't expect you to respect them. And as to familialism, I think that's no way to go. The government should be there for it's people. If you pay taxes for 20 years and then you loose everything, for whatever reason, you should get some help from the government back.

I don't think it warrants a definition. Familial units are groups of people who care for each other and feel safe together. It's completely evolved overtime and shouldn't be restricted to some arbitrary definition.

My family is my family, everyone who is related and some people who are not, but that does not mean I have responsibility for the welfare of my whole family, just my immediate family. I will always help where I can but the help will never come at the cost of niglect to my immediate family. Parents, brothers, sisters, partner, children and eventually grandchildren are my immediate family.

Yes. It has evolved over time for me. I no longer believe family is based on a martial status. Family is who you spend time with and who you would stand up for. I would not say that family is based on marriage.
