Hate speech is defined as public speech that expresses hate or encourages violence towards a person or group based on something such as race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.

Hate speech laws are a Trojan horse for censorship. If you don’t like what you see, get off the internet. Gives absolute power to individuals who get to dictate what constitutes as hatespeech. We have seen this particularly in the last few years in government particularly with the transgender movement as an example. Facts over feelings.

if it is expressing an opinion which is not favorited it’s okay however there should be strict boundaries
No, but it should only apply to the defined protected characteristics (Gender, Age, Sexual Orientation, Religion, Membership of the travelling community, ethnicity and country of origin). It should also only apply to harmful speech that has the potential to cause actual harm.
@9YM3T3Y4wks4W
I think hate speech is horrendous however I do not believe a government should have the power to dictate what someone says.
@9NXPTSZ6mos6MO
Freedom of speech is already a poorly defined concept, many believing it simply means I can what I want whenever I want and no one can criticise me, in actual fact it’s quite the opposite you can say what you like but another person is more than in their rights to criticise said opinion. In this regard hate speech is technically free speech but can be scrutinised and used against the person
@9NWX4CX6mos6MO
Freedom of Speech should be allowed for everyone. Only extreme hate speech like racial slurs and death mocking should be made illegal. Having a difference of opinion/belief based on race, sex or political stance is not hate speech.
No, though the situation surrounding the proper definition of hate speech in Ireland is muddled at best
@9H76M6G1yr1Y
I don't trust the government to define the boundaries especially if it's against them, however, when it comes to ganging up minorities and innocent people, that's obviously a crime
@9MBLRCN7mos7MO
Yes, as long as it is part of a debate environment (such as universities) and it can be freely criticised and argued against.
Yes so long as it isn't targeted harassment and does not threaten violence
@8XFLST73yrs3Y
Hate speech should be censored
@8VS4PHT3yrs3Y
No give them a lie detector test. To make sure they meant what they said.
Yes but only to a certain extent, where the speech is not directed unto an individual aggressively as people should not be chastised for their opinion.
@8TN9N9X3yrs3Y
There is no freedom of speech laws in Ireland , its freedom of expression , Article 40.6 1
@8T3PBNB4yrs4Y
Liars, Bad faith actors, and actively endorsing hate is the only censorship I support.
@98DWMMM2yrs2Y
Yes, as long as it does not threaten violence or doxxing
@97T8QSX2yrs2Y
no, but there should be a law against some members of lgbtq
@8DG6RF44yrs4Y
No, there must be a clear definition of what constitutes hate speech and this will enable authorities to crack down on it. There are far too many people on social media in Ireland spewing hate speech and posing as martyrs when they're punished for it i.e. Gemma O'Doherty
@9887SCG2yrs2Y
Yes as long as there is no idea of superiority against others
@987CMV42yrs2Y
Yes but not free from consequences
@97YG7FL2yrs2Y
No, as long as hate speech is clearly defined

How about we just get a better education system so that people don't use hate speech in the first place?
@4SNPK4B3yrs3Y
Speech that incites violence should not be protected by freedom of speech laws. A well‐written law will say something like that instead of using the phrase “hate speech”.
@ISIDEWITH3mos3MO
@8ZRNKGY3yrs3Y
It depends on what the hate speech is on, if it's on hating pistachio ice cream then it should be protected, but if it's something like a racist ideal/belief then it should not be protected by freedom of speech laws
