In December 2014, the German government announced a new rule which would require German companies to fill 30% of their board seats with women. In Ireland 8% of corporate boards seat women directors which is less than the UK (22.8%), US (19.2%), Canada (20.8%) and Australia (23.6%). In Norway 35.5% of boards contain women directors which is the highest percentage in the world.

Boards of directors or indeed any job should have the best person for the job regardless of gender. If that means they don't balance the gender quota so what? Diversity hires can potentially lower standards.
@9ZTNNHQ3mos3MO
Yes! The government should be doing way more to ensure fairness, equality and diversity in all workplaces
@9ZSXM9T3mos3MO
Is this really even a question? If they are qualified, yes obviously. Why do u care what’s between there legs or on there chest.
@9ZMG639Social Democrats3mos3MO
I don’t think it should be mandated but when it isn’t mandated it’s less likely to happen. I’d love for it to be improved long term while also looking at companies that don’t have women on their board and see why etc
@9ZL6BT73mos3MO
There should be more diversity but the requirement of diversity poses the risk of it being performative rather than sincere integration and thus limits the actual diversity
@9ZH9GDKSocial Democrats3mos3MO
No, but the government need to take responsibility for the reasons behind why women aren't being considered equally for positions on the board
@9ZGNGYB3mos3MO
Yes but only if it makes sense. appointing someone based on gender is not fair, people should be appointed based on skills and experience
@9ZGNCP53mos3MO
business should have the most suitable members on its board, if that happens to be a woman they should not be bypassed simply because of their sex
@9Z9B9Y43mos3MO
I think women should be on more board of directors but only if earned but I do believe people need to be more opening and inclusive of a women being on a board of directors
@9Z979SP3mos3MO
Having one woman in a senior management position will do little to nothing to actually solve any of the problems endemic within major corporations
@9Z979423mos3MO
Yes and no, i think its important to have a diverse board and it would be great if there were more women but also not to be chosen based on the fact they are women.
@9ZFWXV43mos3MO
I don’t think a women should be hired just because she’s a women and they HAVE to hire one. Whoever is just capable or qualified forms job should get the job no one should be sexist to any gender
@9ZFRVG23mos3MO
The problems with companies are too foundational for the personal experiences of their board to properly counteract. Structural change is required rather than an attempt to balance the scale.
@9ZFC98H3mos3MO
Yes, but the government should not be involved in mandating this. A system of mandatory reporting (like that in place in Iceland) whereby companies must report on their directors qualifications, is preferable.
@9ZDYNK4Social Democrats3mos3MO
Board directors should be the most qualified regardless of gender however there should be strict guidelines in place to ensure decisions being made are non-bias
I think it is very important for there to be diversity but I don’t think that it should be a requirement as this makes the female representation quite tokenistic.
@9Z9Z3363mos3MO
Yes, but this should occur naturally through underprivileged or underrepresented groups including women being provided with resources and encouraged to pursue such careers and gender reporting should be more frequent
@9TZ8FMS5mos5MO
No, but better education and training, along with more in-depth reporting on leadership roles should be required
@9H76M6G1yr1Y
Only if there is discrimination in the business. If everyone is equal and it just happened that all board members were male, that's fine and vice versa (and anyone else no matter what they identify as!)
@9F49VTM1yr1Y
Only if that gender is underrepresented
@9V56Q2Y5mos5MO
I would like female board members to be present due to equal opportunities and through a more equal society, not through ham fisted legislation that does not address the root causes of gender inequality in the workplace
@9TZ8VRB5mos5MO
No but increase training and education on diversity and bias and increase reporting on gender in workplace
@9JDSGN91yr1Y
Yes and the government should place more emphasis on alternate ways of accessing the qualifications necessary
@9HHSX2Q1yr1Y
Women of merit should be appointed to the boards which should eventually reach 50% . But women should not just be appointed because they are women .
@8RQ5ZYP4yrs4Y
No, though more woman should be encouraged to run for such positions.
@8XMYMZG3yrs3Y
Not required, but not discriminated against to the point of actually having none on the board.
@8W5278R3yrs3Y
No but diversity should be strongly encouraged
@8VT36Y5Fianna Fáil3yrs3Y
They can and cant it doesnt matter what gender as long as they arent excluding a certain gender
@8TN974Q4yrs4Y
Yes and they should also be required to have black women represented on every board
@8SW57DK4yrs4Y
Board members should be the most qualified regardless of gender, but some checks to ensure that discrimination does not take place may be necessary
@8SS7DSQ4yrs4Y
It shouldn’t be required, but it shouldn’t be that a woman can’t be a director at all
@8SQMNL84yrs4Y
Yes, if anyone is qualified for the job they deserve to have the job
@8S56C2D4yrs4Y
This is a neoliberal take more should be done rather than focus on representation on a board
@8RZJ5Z24yrs4Y
No, but it should be a requirement for government funding, subsidies, or contracts.
@8RPFXDH4yrs4Y
They should base it on skill not gender or race
@8RP2FN44yrs4Y
They should hire based on skill not gender
@8RLNYM84yrs4Y
Yes, but at the same time, we should not have boards of directors
@8RLGPYF4yrs4Y
No, but they should be required to promote diversity through initiatives etc
@8R7J67X4yrs4Y
No, but companies should do more to promote equality, and encourage women to strive for leadership positions.
@8PS9KCD4yrs4Y
no businesses, they are oppressive forces
Yes but only if they are fully qualified and until there is more of a balance in high-up positions
No, but tax those who do not at a higher rate.
@8WXQ8D83yrs3Y
But only if there are deemed to have the correct skills experience and aptitude for the position
@8VS4PHT3yrs3Y
Sometimes they should bring in a woman who has experienced it. For issues like abortion.
@9BZBGT92yrs2Y
No but the government should do more to encourage diversity in the workplace - overall diversity, not just women.
@98DWMMM2yrs2Y
@98B4RF92yrs2Y
Private Business should be abolished, and capitalism altogether done away with
No, but if there is no diversity on the board, they should be required to demonstrate why it isn't necessary
No, changing the environment so that women are equally likely to end up on the board is more important
@94RHCY72yrs2Y
Yes, but the women should be employed for their skills and qualifications, not just to fill the role of a female staff member
@94739L63yrs3Y
Yes, but the requirement should only be according to the ratio of male to female employees within the organisation
@92S44TK3yrs3Y
Yes, but equal opportunities should be offered by interviewing a demographic based on a reflection of the population and ultimately the best person for the job should be hired
@92GB6SW3yrs3Y
Women can give insights men don't have
@8ZWHFR8Social Democrats3yrs3Y
No, but the government should require workplace diversity in general and have ways of dealing with abuses
@roboticnekoart3yrs3Y
If there are 2 people equally qualified and need a diversity hire. There
I am against private enterprise
@8YJMW2L3yrs3Y
I would like if they had women but it is not for the law to enforce
@ISIDEWITH5mos5MO

Deleted4yrs4Y
No, people should be hired on their qualifications and skills, not their gender or race
@8PGZTFZ4yrs4Y
Yes, and the government should do more to require diversity in the workplace however board members should be the most qualified as possible
@8ZRNKGY3yrs3Y
No, just like men should not be required to be on a board of directors, it just doesn't make sense.
