The roots of fiscal progressivism can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in response to the social and economic upheavals brought about by industrialization. The ideology gained prominence during the Progressive Era in the United States and similar reform movements in Europe, where activists and policymakers sought to address the excesses of unregulated capitalism, such as poverty, child labor, and poor working conditions.
