I think legislatures should heed public opinion, but there's also a huge issue of misinformation and a lack of understanding by the public when discussing legal issues. I think the media has massively failed in its responsibility to accurately report on criminal law in Ireland and it has led to a wave of misinformation about how the legal system operates or why certain laws/procedures work in the manner they do. As a result, I don't think it's necessarily always the best idea to have the court of public opinion act as the legislatures as well.
