Militarization of police refers to the use of military equipment and tactics by law enforcement officers. This includes the use of armored vehicles, assault rifles, flashbang grenades, sniper rifles, and SWAT teams. Proponents argue that this equipment increases officers’ safety and enables them to better protect the public and other first responders. Opponents argue that police forces which received military equipment were more likely to have violent encounters with the public.

Yes, but with strict training on how and when to use the equipment

The police hold a monopoly on violence within the State as is, therefore there need to be strict limits to what force they can use. Militarization only escalates the risk of unnecessary force.
Why should our gardaí be armed to military grade? Are they encountering situations whereby individuals are armed with the aforementioned grade equipment? It would be a substantial excessive force.

Yes, but with strict training. Also, they need to be qualified by the authorities above to do so. They need to have all of the physical and mental health checked before strict training.
@98KKYR81yr1Y
No, but they should have more effective equipment than they have now
@98JC92W1yr1Y
Yes they should have guns but nothing more
@8YJMW2L2yrs2Y
military grade is a poorly defined term
@8XL8DNR2yrs2Y
Yes but after psychiatric evaluation, training and body cameras
@8R9QSFF3yrs3Y
Yes, but limited to certain guns.
@93S334Y2yrs2Y
depends on training levels
@93JPSKN2yrs2Y
it depends in what circumstances
@8ZRND8B2yrs2Y
Only specific people in the force, but with safety checks for them and rules such as camera's when the items are being used. Only most trusted people in the force
@8XR8DQ22yrs2Y
Yes, "Military Grade" isn't some kind of violence ending work of god. It's just surplus equipment that would otherwise be sold to civilians/collectors, gather dust or be destroyed.
