They should be supported to learn English for practical reasons but not discouraged from speaking their own languages. A multilingual society can thrive both culturally and economically.

 @9ZVDPHYanswered…5mos5MO

It should be up to the person. If they are moving to an English speaking country they should be aware that we will not speak their language.

They should not have to learn English but it would greatly benefit them as they won’t get far without it

 @9ZM7KY2Social Democratsanswered…6mos6MO

It’s ironic asking people to learn an English when we DONT speak our OWN LANGUAGE AKA IRISH in case you forgot. Tiocfaidh ar lá

i dont think as irish people, we have the right to be forcing anyone to speak a certain language after what the english did to us. so NO

 @9ZHB2JTIndependentanswered…6mos6MO

They should be required to learn either English or Irish but the government should provide language learning courses

 @9ZH95KBanswered…6mos6MO

I think it's their choice to learn English, like realistically if they live and work here they will and I think the government should provide free lessons.

 @9ZD69XPanswered…6mos6MO

No, But would be heavily incentivised and the government should provide courses that are either for those who wish to learn.

 @9ZD63DY answered…6mos6MO

its obviously important they learn englihs but when they come over here its already a huge chnage and to then demand them to know this alnguage is crazy they should learn nd they will with time it shoudlnt be a madatory requirement as soon as they arrive

 @9ZD2XSManswered…6mos6MO

It should not be required but language learning support should be offered as it will benefit the immigrants greatly to learn English

 @9ZCZFFVanswered…6mos6MO

While it should be encouraged with supports put in place, it shouldn't be a requirement as some may not be able to learn the language due to personal circumstances

 @9ZCRTYPanswered…6mos6MO

They shouldn’t be required but influenced and encouraged with free courses, they should be required comprehension of English and being able to speak it decently if they want to work in a job that includes dealing with customers.

 @9ZBSVRYanswered…6mos6MO

Yes as it will be more useful and easier for them to communicate so the government should provide free language learning courses but we should also embrace the diversity that immigrants add to our country

 @9ZBSKBPanswered…6mos6MO

We should help immigrants integrate into Ireland by learning English and Irish through free classes, as this may improve their job opportunities and standard of living, but they shouldn't be forced to learn it.

Yes, it is important to be able to understand the language spoken around you. Also, the government should provide free language training courses

 @9ZB9NQNanswered…6mos6MO

It depends. Eg if they are working on a building site, everyone has to have a site induction. Explaining the site heath and safety rules. And its in English. But they shouldn't be made.

 @9Z9VSYFanswered…6mos6MO

 @9YNC7RZanswered…6mos6MO

yes and no they should have free access to it if they choose but they would need a degree of english anyway to get a job in ireland

 @9YN5BXPanswered…6mos6MO

Yes but must be required to pass a certain level of an exam maybe ? If they want to move here they can find it themselves and for asylum seekers and people in need then maybe it could be provided to them by the government and they can learn it while there here

 @9YMV45JSinn Féinanswered…6mos6MO

I think they can have a choice to learn English but there should be more free languages courses to encourage diversity in general and multiple languages for everyone to know.

 @9YLXL2V from Seoul-t'ukpyolsi  answered…6mos6MO

Yes with government funded free programmes but with a positive multilingual approach. It should not be enforced as the superior language but as an important tool for integration while celebrating the diversity they bring with them. Especially since we are a country that already employs a variety of foreign language and culture learning in second and third level.

 @9YLMZHGanswered…6mos6MO

 @9ZFK4YRanswered…6mos6MO

If they want to learn English there should be resources there for them, but to not feel like they have to/be pressured into learning English.

 @9ZFF4F9Social Democratsanswered…6mos6MO

I believe more of an emphasis ( especially for the children involved who settle and grow up in Ireland) should be placed on learning Irish, along with English. This way our language can be preserved, while also passing on to the following generations.

 @9ZF9GNZanswered…6mos6MO

We lost our language , hypocritical to try and take someone else’s. Let them have the option to learn English and the government should make suitable resources available for immigrants to do this.

 @9RVB6MGanswered…9mos9MO

 @9MLY2XBanswered…12mos12MO

No, but we should provide opt-in services for both the English and Irish language for all members of society, new and existing.

 @9KWVSV3Republican Sinn Féinanswered…1yr1Y

Both Irish and English should be taught, and it should be non negotiable. The government should also take steps to ensure that being unable to speak Irish puts you at a disadvantage

 @9H7CKHYSocial Democratsanswered…1yr1Y

Yes; not legally so but it would be in their best interests to do so when emigrating to a country that speaks a different language

 @9H6SX89Sinn Féinanswered…1yr1Y
