No, this would disadvantage minority groups who would not be able to get elected otherwise. Travelers for example.

Yes, but it shouldn’t exist full stop as it’s a waste of time and taxpayer money on politicians who wield little to no power

Frankly I feel as if the Seanad is redundant and should be replaced with another more effective body.

No, though at least the 6 seats voted only by those with degrees from certain universities should be extended to all universities and for foreign Irish (USA UK EU etc)

 @978QXVSanswered…1yr1Y

I think it should be elected but to elected them you should have to show some professional knowledge. I do not think attending a specific university is a good bar to set.

Yes, but remove direct appointments and extend the colleges to satisfy all third party institutions.

 @8ZQSXVCSinn Féinanswered…2yrs2Y

Yes, anyone should be allowed vote in the Seanad election but the candidates must have a NFQ 8+ education achievement to qualify to run.

 @AdamjnrGreenanswered…2yrs2Y

Yes, Senators should elected through an open list system on the same day as Dáil elections. Seanad constituencies would be Dublin, Leinster, Munster, and Connacht/Ulster, with 56 seats distributed proportionally to population. 4 Seanad seats would be reserved for overseas Irish citizens.

No, though at least the 6 seats voted only by those with university degrees should be expanded to all eligible voters. With 2 candidates in each EU constituency.

Yes but senators should have proper qualifications such as a degree or experience in a field

No, appointed members ensure stability and progress and prevent political deadlock

maybe some form of party list system (party x gets 5% of voters but 2% of seats>get seanad seats =3% of dáil seats)

 @8QZMVZ2answered…3yrs3Y

It should be an elected body but you should require certain qualifications to run and seats should be reserved for certain groups

 @8Q783SSanswered…3yrs3Y

We should abolish the Seanad and the Dáil, replacing them with a new style of government, with two new houses, one which deals with the governing of the state, and one which deals with the local governments, which should be given more power.

 @8C5RDBVanswered…4yrs4Y

Voting rights should be extended to all colleges not through referendum for better representation.

 @8DG6RF4answered…4yrs4Y

Seanad should be dismantled, it is essentially a waste of money and a fallback for candidates that didn't get elected to the Dail. If this is done however, more of a light needs to be shone on the work done and concerns raised by local councillors nationwide.

 @8CWNV9Janswered…4yrs4Y

No, too much power would be allocated to the dáil. Reform to allow all colleges an equal vote for more representation
