Many of the youth are uneducated in economic issues and quite frankly a lot racist which we could see at the riots where majority were young people with many being under 18. I think young people have the most influence on other young people and therefor I think many young people would just lean towards whatever other people say their age
@BBBDJ28Independent Ireland2mos2MO
Because the majority of people would want it increased even though that’s not the best thing for our economy
Personally, as a 16 year old who is able to work in this country along with my fellow classmates, I do not believe that some people in my school year have the knowledge to make decisions during votes that may alter the course of our lives here. Unfortunately, I don't think that these 16 yr olds are mature enough to make these voting choices.
Children remain such and need more education and critical thinking skills before they should be allowed to vote
@9ZW8HL91yr1Y
Anyone aged 16yrs or older, should be allowed to vote. If you can legally work and pay taxes and drive a tractor (and in the case of 17yr olds drive a car) you should be able to have a say in how those things can all be done legally.
@9ZTKQB31yr1Y
Because you have children who start working at a very young age to support their families but they don’t understand policy or politics
The voting age should remain at 18. Teenagers are not developed enough emotionally or mentally until they reach adulthood. Most teenagers are not politically engaged during their school days either. Working full time or studying full time will help them to emotionally mature and think of the bigger picture.
If people are paying taxes than they should, regardless of age have a right to vote on what their taxes are going toward
Fair point maybe instead offer free courses on government offering all sides to people under minimum legal age and upon completeion give exemptions for voting
While young people should be allowed to work, and have taxes collected in the form of PAYE and PRSI, this does not mean that they are mature enough to educate themselves of political issues and influence how the country is run.
@9ZGPJ2P1yr1Y
That would permit young people as low as 13 to vote, which is unsafe due to foreign influences from media. Their mind has not fully developed to from their own decisions
@9ZDYVL51yr1Y
Minimum voting age should stay at 18 as before that age you most likely do not have enough information on politics to vote and can be easily influenced online by miss information
@9ZD332J1yr1Y
If you under the age of 18 your brain is not fully developed and you do not have a full understanding on the world of politics
If they can argue and create a sound logic to back up their political stance, then why shouldn't they vote? They're already dealing with taxes.
They are still not mature enough to vote, the reason they pay taxes is to provide them with public services.
@9ZRS3V61yr1Y
Having a part time job does not impart the maturity, knowledge, or forward thinking to be trusted to vote.
If we allow any citizen that pays taxes to vote then you leave the door open to 2 additional arguements
1. The more tax you pay the more your vote should mean.
2. People that dont pay tax, i.e social welfare recipient, pensioners, disabled etc shouldnt be allowed to vote.
Both arguements are ridiculous, but so is voting based on payimg tax.
@9P7NV682yrs2Y
I feel the minimum voting age needs to stay at 18 and no lower and that people should have in-depth knowledge of the parties and candidates they are voting for.
@9NP48WV 2yrs2Y
I think sufficient time should be spent in Ireland 2/3 years in order to understand the political system before being allowed to vote and potentially change the constitution
@9H6BR3X2yrs2Y
No, they could be working a low to no education required job, and dropped out of school early and then got a low pay job. They are uneducated and not mature enough to decide the fate of the government
Young people who have an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex should not be allowed vote, the minimum age should be 18; a compulsory iq test and understanding of basic politics test should also be mandated
@BC2L9HFSocial Democrats2mos2MO
well a lot of people under the age of 18 are paying tax and are also citizens so i belive that under 18s are subject to peer pressure and may make uneducated votes
@9ZSPJFQ1yr1Y
under 18s don’t pay taxes and a lot of them won’t understand the different parties and their values - an 18yr old who hasn’t got a clue xx
@9ZSV4SJ 1yr1Y
Children under 18 pay taxes when doing various jobs and I don't believe they should be allowed to vote. 16 is too young. Me at 17 knows who i would vote for in this election but I can't say the same for my friends or classmates.
when you’re under 18 you’re political affiliations are often not developed and it would just lead children to vote for anyone for the sake of voting
