Should Ireland increase or decrease military spending?
The average EU country spends 1.3% of its GDP on defence. Ireland currently spends .5% (a decline of .4% since 2008). Proponents of higher defence spending argue that the low spending puts the country at risk and the spending level should be raised to match other developed EU countries. Opponents argue that raising spending is unnecessary since armed conflicts can be prevented through diplomacy.

There is a possibility of 'Water wars' in the future which could put us at risk, but instead, I think we should be more proactive in working in solidarity with the worst affected by many of the world's issues. Again I know that we out of the western world will have done the least damage really, but that has us in a special position where we could be a shining light to many of these deeply misguided nations
@9ZVTW4Q1mo1MO
Military spend should stop world wide because the killing of people is crazy and we kinda need to stop doing this soon!!!

Ireland should maintain a modest but effective defense capability to ensure national security and contribute to global peacekeeping. At the same time, it should focus on diplomacy and non-military solutions to conflict, balancing peace efforts without escalating the potential for war.
Increase it to make sure all Irish troops are able to properly defend themselves, especially on their current peacekeeping missions in war torn areas. We need our troops to have adequate and up to date training and equipment
@9ZHD78H2mos2MO
increase it to give those in the armed forces a better standard of living in line with todays standards and inflation
@9YN486Q2mos2MO
Increase if it means our military are safely and comfortably living with up to date combat and information.
Increase, however the funding should be used specifically for what Ireland needs to defend its shores & to fulfill UN peacekeeping, not power projection.

Increase only in so much as it brings our army and navy forces up to required levels for our existing commitments
@9L7WP2X10mos10MO
We need more spending for maritime protection. Fish Stocks and are waters should be properly protected. So more money and people are needed in the air core and navy to protect the waters.

Yes, to a minimum of 2 per cent of GDP and to invest in cyber infrastructure, naval and air corps upgrades

I don't support war and would rather peaceful methods but protecting civilians is important. Peaceful methods
The Republic of Ireland should drastically increase the military budget. There should be forced conscription for all men aged 18-45. With these new policies the Republic can EASILY retake the North of Ireland.
Fund and train a professional guerilla army that would make any millitary occupation of our country too costly. We could never fund an army that could prevent an invasion by any major power however we could prepare our forces in a way that turns the country into a giant trap for any occupier. Common knowledge of this would safeguard our neutrality without spending billions on tanks and planes that would be outmatched and destroyed in a few days by any modern superpower
@9L2W2JQ10mos10MO
Only if it the money is spent on peacekeeping and giving our service personnel a decent standard of living.
Neither, we should focus on international relations and collaboration in science.

In the interest of making my answers relevant to lots of different countries, I cannot reasonably answer this question, as an informed answer could easily be different depending on the country being asked about. Separately though, I don’t know enough about military spending levels to have an informed answer for this regardless.

Increase, but spend it on the wages of soldiers and their benefits post-service. We dont need highly advanced technology if the people are suicidal and homeless.
