Ukraine and Russia have held a third round of peace talks in Istanbul, but hopes for a breakthrough remain low as both sides remain far apart on key issues.
While the negotiations resulted in agreements for further prisoner swaps, there was little progress on a ceasefire or plans for a leaders' summit. Ukrainian President Zelensky has repeatedly called for direct talks with Russian President Putin, but the Kremlin continues to insist on achieving its own objectives before considering peace. Meanwhile, deadly Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continue, underscoring the urgency but also the difficulty of reaching a settlement.
International pressure is mounting, but both sides appear entrenched, making a near-term resolution unlikely.
