European powers—Britain, France, and Germany—have warned Iran that they will reimpose tough United Nations sanctions by the end of August unless Iran makes concrete progress on its nuclear program.
The so-called 'snapback' mechanism would restore sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, which has been faltering amid accusations from both sides of failing to uphold commitments. Iran has agreed to resume talks with the European trio in Istanbul, but insists that reimposing sanctions would further complicate the situation and has threatened retaliation. The diplomatic standoff comes as Iran also consults with Russia and China, and as regional tensions remain high.
The outcome of these talks could determine whether Iran faces renewed international isolation or a path back to nuclear diplomacy.
