The United Kingdom has imposed a major new round of sanctions targeting Russia’s so-called 'shadow fleet'—a network of 135 oil tankers and two associated companies used to secretly transport Russian oil and evade existing international restrictions.
These tankers have reportedly moved $24 billion worth of oil since early 2024, providing critical revenue for Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. The sanctions aim to disrupt Russia’s ability to fund its military by restricting access to global shipping, insurance, and trading services. The UK’s move is part of a broader Western effort, alongside the EU, to clamp down on the infrastructure enabling Russia’s illicit oil trade.
Analysts say the crackdown could significantly impact global shipping and further isolate Russia’s energy sector.
