China has begun construction on what will be the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, a $167 billion project that could surpass the Three Gorges Dam in scale and output.
The dam is expected to generate three times more electricity than Three Gorges, boosting China’s renewable energy capacity and green finance ambitions. However, the project has triggered alarm in neighboring India and Bangladesh, who fear it could threaten water security and disrupt the flow of the Brahmaputra River downstream, impacting millions. Environmentalists and human rights advocates have also raised concerns about the lack of consultation, potential ecological damage, and the impact on local communities.
Despite these worries, Chinese markets and hydropower-related stocks have surged in response to the project’s economic promise.
