The United Kingdom has imposed sweeping new sanctions targeting Russia’s so-called 'shadow fleet,' blacklisting 135 oil tankers and two related companies.
These vessels have been instrumental in secretly transporting billions of dollars’ worth of Russian oil, helping Moscow evade previous sanctions and fund its war efforts. The move is part of a broader Western effort, including the EU, to disrupt Russia’s energy revenues and clamp down on networks facilitating illicit oil trade. The sanctions also target companies operating flag registries and trading arms linked to Russian oil exports.
Analysts say this action aims to cripple Russia’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine by tightening enforcement and closing loopholes in existing sanctions.
