Less becomes known and normalised when you arnt surrounded and forced to come to terms that people live differently with different beliefs and stances. When not exposed to this early, it can be hard for some to come to terms with things such as meeting people with different political beliefs, different religions, different sexualitys etc. This can then lead to accidentally saying or implying offensive things that can then lead to a label of being 'racist' or 'homophobic'. And that's just if it's an accident; some people can become scared of what they don't know and that can lead to actual bigoted comments that in the long run benefits no one.
